Fire Wood.
A cord of wood (4’x4’x8') is 128 cubic
feet tightly stacked or it is also sold as a face
cord in 12” or 16”, which is 1/4 or a
1/3 of a cordwood.
Wood stove.
Many homeowners concerned about rising home heating
bills install a wood stove to reduce heating cost.
Adding a wood stove to a house must be undertaken
properly to ensure a safe installation.
Chimney
If an installer of woodstoves who will install also
your chimney try you to talk you into installing an
outside chimney, shake his hand and say “your
service is no longer required”, and why?, a
chimney belongs inside the house where it stays warm
and in a strait line from woodstove to roof.
Things to remember about chimneys
No Stovepipe through Walls or Windows--Use only UL
Approved Chimney
No bends in the chimney for the best updraft.
A chimney should extend a minimum of 3 feet above
the roof surface and 2 feet above anything within
10 Feet.
Consult with your Woodstove Dealer, Chimney Sweep
and Building code.
Wall and Floor Protection.
Wall clearances can be reduced by using either a rear
heat shield on the stove or properly installed wall
protection.
The wall can be brick, stone, cement board on steel
studs or an approved stove shield, usually mounted
on spacers with a 1"to 1 1/2" air space
to the combustible wall. Check your owners manual
or local building codes.
Non-Combustible flooring must extend under the stove,
12" past the sides and back and 18" in front
of doors or according to local building code.
Fire insurance.
Consult your insurance broker, there are maybe restrictions
in your policy.
